BBC to Announce New Doctor Who Companion Tomorrow

Tomorrow’s going to be a big day for Whovians, as the BBC will be announcing Doctor Who‘s newest companion!

Info about the new companion and the actor playing them will be announced in the most British way possible — during a show about football (soccer for us dumb Americans). Actually, probably the most British way would’ve been over tea, but I digress. Viewers watching the BBC One show Match of the Day tomorrow will be the first to hear about the new companion at half-time during the FA Cup semi-final between Everton and Manchester United.

However, if you don’t have access to BBC One in any way, rest assured that the official Doctor Who social media streams are on it, and news about the new companion will be released via the Doctor Who Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts. According to the BBC One Doctor Who page, “The MOTD Live coverage will start on BBC One at 4.50pm with kick-off planned for 5.15pm.” This is all UK time, of course.

We reported a little while back that one of the contenders in the role of companion was Rakhee Thakrar, formerly of the show EastEnders. I think it would be awesome to finally have another woman of color on the TARDIS with the Doctor, as we haven’t seen one since Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones left in 2007. Then again, there’s a huge part of me that doesn’t want a female companion at all. When I think about characters like Rory Williams, or Jamie McCrimmon, or Captain Jack Harkness, or even going all the way back to Ian Chesterton, I think that there’s such an interesting dynamic between the Doctor and male companions, whereas female companions tend to have a more stereotypical subordinate relationship to the Doctor.

Then again, maybe what I really want is a female companion who exists as freely as the male companions seem to. Clara and Ashildr are the closest we’ve come to my version of ideal female companions. Perhaps I just want something that’s more that.

What are you hoping for in the next Doctor Who companion? Tell us when your ideal companion would be like in the comments below!
