This Just In: Syfy To Create Another Battlestar Galactica Spinoff
With Caprica barely out of the gates, Syfy has announced that it’s interested in spawning yet another Battlestar Galactica spinoff.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, VP of Original Programming Mark Stern hinted that the new series would capitalize on Battlestar’s success as a space opera. In other words, the new show might take audiences back into the seat of a Viper, something that has been notably missing from Caprica. While evasive with any concrete details, Stern sounded optimistic about the potential spinoff:
“We’re looking for other ways to spin off ‘Battlestar’ beyond ‘Caprica,’ ” he said. “That world is so rich. We’re sitting down with (executive producer) Ron Moore and his team. It would not necessarily be a traditional series.”
So does this mean that Caprica will get to stick around for a few more seasons as well? In spite of less than stellar ratings, Stern seems to think so:
“We have a lot of hope for that show,” Stern said. “The (DVR data) has been very promising and growing week after week.”
Looks like Syfy knows when they’ve got a good thing and are investing in the continued bankability of the Battlestar franchise. While the part of me that selfishly wants to see awesome Viper pilot action again screams “YES,” there’s another voice in my head saying, “Patience, Syfy.” Ron Moore, of all people, should be wary of putting too much Battlestar on the air simultaneously. After all, he was at the helm when Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager split ratings from ’95-’99.
That said, to hell with my iron-clad logic. I dare you, Syfy execs, to bring on the Battlestar Galactica multiverse! However many variations of Battlestar Galatica you throw at us, so help the gods I will watch them. I will watch them all.
Right then, so what do you think the new Battlestar spinoff should be? Battlestar: 3D? Or BSG: SVU? How about America’s Next Top Cylon?
