I’m Not Sure How to Feel About This Hellboy Reboot Without Ron Perlman and Guillermo Del Toro
Hmm ...
Is it still a Hellboy movie if there’s no Ron Perlman or Guillermo Del Toro? That’s what we’re about to find out.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are teaming up with Millennium to develop a movie about the demonic comic book character, but I’m not sure I’m on board with this. While Perlman and Del Toro only teamed up for two Hellboy films, in 2004 and 2008 respectively, they’ve become synonymous with the franchise, so it feels strange to see other names attached.
Then again, this new film is going to be a reboot, so it makes sense to bring in new people—but it still doesn’t make me any less apprehensive about accepting this strange new step-family into the mix. Slightly reassuring is the fact that Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson has signed on to produce, and horror director Neil Marshall is set to helm. His work on The Descent and Game of Thrones proves he knows how to tell a good story, so at least this reboot has that going for it.
As for who is set to play the iconic red-skinned devil with an affinity for cigars, Stranger Things star David Harbour is reportedly in talks for the role. He definitely has the build for it but filling Perlman’s shoes will be a massive undertaking. I hope he’s up for the challenge.
Overall, things look nice on paper but I still have reservations. As we’ve seen with Jupiter Ascending, a talented cast and crew doesn’t always translate to a good film. How do you all feel about this?
