This Will Exist: Another Awful, Awful Mortal Kombat Movie is In the Works
That’s right — Warner Bros. apparently thinks that Mortal Kombat, the legendarily sanguinary video game franchise, is valuable enough to warrant a follow-up to 1997’s critically savaged feature film, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
The series has indeed already spawned two movies, one medium-grade mid-90’s moral panic, and an, um, “animated film” (see above), but another movie? Wasn’t Street Fighter: the Legend of Chun-Li enough?
Warner acquired the rights to Mortal Kombat, remember, when Sumner Redstone-controlled Midway Games collapsed in a flurry of debt and woeful game concepts. The real twist is that, now that the relevant IP has changed hands, the company which made the original two films is attempting to wrest back control of the fictional universe. Threshold, however, appears to have not completed any projects in the past few years other than BlackBelt TV, “a new television network showing the world’s greatest martial arts fights, movies and anime 24/7.” Uh-huh.
With a video game/movie project this ill-starred, there can really be only once choice for a director once this legal mess is cleared up… right?
