New The Powerpuff Girls Series Officially Coming to TV in 2016
So that's what they meant by "everything nice."
The city of Townsville is in danger, and it turns out that one TV special just wasn’t enough. The world needs more of the Powerpuff girls. As Cartoon Network announced on Monday, that’s exactly what we’re gonna get. And once again, the day is saved!
The new series will launch sometimes in 2016 (Are you ready to feel old? This reboot will premiere 18 years after the original show did in 1998. Gah) and will follow Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as they dedicate their lives to fighting crime and the forces of evil.
“The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” chief content officer Rob Sorcher said in a statement. “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”
Of course, this isn’t the first new Powerpuff series to make it to television since the original Emmy-winning series first went off the air in 2005. There was a tenth anniversary special on Cartoon Network in 2009, as well as a 2006 Japanese magical girl anime (PPGZ) that never made it to American television.
And, of course, there was this year’s TV special that aired in January, Dance Pantsed. It’s unknown whether this new series will utilize the same CGI style, or if original PPG creator Craig McCracken will once again have an input. Hopefully he will, as Dance Pantsed reportedly didn’t live up to the much beloved original for some critics. Still, a longer series with plenty of production time might give the writers more time to flesh out our favorite super powered girls in a way that they couldn’t do in a single 23 minute episode. What do you think?
