New Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer Brings the Moment We’ve All Been Waiting For

And I very much mean "moment."

Fans at Star Wars Celebration got to see a lot more of Rogue One than we did at home, but we’re finally catching up with this new trailer (which is still apparently not the one seen live at the show). With the movie just four months away, it’s time for the picture of what we’re going to see to get clearer, and while we already know plenty enough to get us excited, this trailer gives us the biggest reveal yet.

Go ahead and watch it before reading on if you really enjoy the element of surprise.

You can catch up with us a little farther down.

Did you watch it yet?

Great! We already knew Darth Vader was going to be part of the movie—I mean, as the Empire’s most imposing figure during the time period of the story, it’d be weird if he weren’t—but seeing him return to the screen in non-Revenge of the Sith glory is still delightful. Of course, they’re saving his iconic voice (courtesy of James Earl Jones once again), probably to pull it out later in the marketing push to really get us all worked up, but just seeing him on screen at the height of his galactic domination again really helps set the stage for the movie and drives home just what Jyn Erso is up against. (Rampant speculation: Is that Vader in the TIE fighter or will it turn out to be a friend?)

We’ve gotten prequels before, and we all enjoyed The Force Awakens, but this is the first movie to happen in the time period of the original trilogy since Return of the Jedi. It’s an exciting prospect to reopen that part of the franchise, and this trailer, despite its decidedly moody tone, feels very much like Star Wars—a Star Wars we haven’t seen before but that’s always been there. If the movie feels the same, Disney and Lucasfilm will have pulled off something pretty amazing. We’ll find out on December 18.
