New S.H.I.E.L.D. Teaser Reveals Mystery Hologram and His Holographic Chair

Do we have a new mystery character to obsess over? We do

A new TV spot for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the show whose torturous-to-type title can’t stifle our enthusiasm for it, aired last night during the NBA Finals. And now that the Internet has lost interest in speculating on the identity of the mysterious hooded hero played by Angel alum J. August Richards (he’s apparently not Cage or Rage), we have a new contender for “most mysterious character who may turn out to not have a comics counterpart after all, making speculation pointless.”

If he is a character. Four seconds into a 15 second promo, we see Brett Dalton’s Agent Grant Ward face-to-face with a holographic man in armor-like clothing, who glares at him and lifts what appears to be a holographic projection of a swivel chair. Even holograms need exercise, I guess.

So who is it? Is it time to check our Marvel character guides for clues? One possibility is that we’re not looking at a holographic character at all; Ward might just be watching a sophisticated recording of a crime-scene simulation like the one Tony Stark uses in Iron Man III,  or maybe the government agency with a flying aircraft carrier over-engineered its answering machines. Supporting this, we also see tech-expert Agent Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) in the background fiddling with something tech-y, so this may not be a huge mystery.

The rest of the brief promo mostly featured footage already seen in the 3-minute trailer.

In related news, Samuel L. Jackson told Vulture that he thinks Nick Fury showing up on S.H.I.E.L.D. would “legitimize” the show. “I’d like to be — you know Charlie’s voice on Charlie’s Angels?” Jackson said. “That would be perfect. Because everybody recognizes my voice.” No arguments there; that would be perfect and is a thing that should happen. Is Samuel L. Jackson ever wrong?
