New The Suicide Squad Casting Ensures James Gunn Will Make Us Love More Weird Characters
Love him or hate him, the guy's good with weird characters.
James Gunn made audiences fall in love with a talking tree and a talking raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, he’ll make us fall in love with a new set of weird characters, such as the fabled Polka Dot Man, for DC’s The Suicide Squad.
David Dastmalchian, who appears in the Ant-Man movies, has been cast as Polka Dot Man, a.k.a. Abner Krill. Polka Dot Man’s abilities include turning spots into buzzsaws and whatnot. If you haven’t heard of him, don’t worry; he’s only appeared about a dozen times since his creation. There’s hope, though, as rumors are saying the character will lean into how silly his powers are.
Others rumored to be joining the fray alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang are Ratcatcher (who, according to Variety, will be played by Daniela Melchior), Peacemaker, and King Shark. Yeah. King Shark. We still don’t know who Idris Elba is playing. God, I hope it’s not King Shark.
This might seem like a weird lineup of characters for a film, but honestly? I’m actually excited for it. While Gunn isn’t my favorite director, I admire how he turned the Guardians of the Galaxy into stars of the Marvel universe. Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Nebula, Yondu, Rocket, and Groot were not A-listers by any standard when the first Guardians of the Galaxy came out, and now they’re beloved by audiences. If he can make us fall in love with Groot, we’ll love Polka Dot Man.
