New Titans Trailer Doesn’t Know the Difference Between Edgy and Edgelord
I do not think I have ever said “nope” quicker than watching the new Titans trailer. Not only do they have Robin saying, “Fuck Batman,” but also stepping on someone’s neck to kill them. Did Frank Miller write this? According to Comicbook, this new show is basically “Dick Grayson and Friends.”
“Titans follows a group of young soon-to-be superheroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In the action-adventure series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes that includes Starfire, Raven and others.”
“And others” indeed.
Teen Titans has been a popular series for decades in the comics, and the Teen Titans cartoon network show (and, to a degree, Young Justice), so it’s not surprising that a live action Titans adaptation was coming in some form. But as Killmonger would say: Is this our king? Not only do Raven, Beast Boy, and Starfire all look off, but everything seems more Disney Channel Original Movie than full-fledged television series based on a major property.
Actually, that’s a lie, because I watched the Disney Descendants movies, and they arguably have much better wigs.
Starfire’s look is where I find myself the most irritated, because there was so much racist bullshit that came out when Anna Diop was cast. Whilst it is still bullshit to dislike her in the role just because she’s a black woman, is this really the best the wig budget could do? We’ve seen Zoe Saldana rock green skin and red hair for three films, and this is all we get? I know this is a television show, but still, I haven’t been offended by a wig this way since Inhumans.
Just watching Dick Grayson’s Robin killing people is kind of … I don’t know, just too try-hard. Him stepping on someone’s neck to break it while saying, “Fuck Batman,” feels like such a Jason Todd move. He’s shooting guns and stabbing people with razor sharp Rs. Has Dick had his problems with the Batfather? Sure, who hasn’t? But like, where is this coming from?
I know the answer is wait and see, but all I’m seeing is a lot of nothing. In fact, I’m sure if you played the trailer for New Mutants over this one, you would see no real difference.
This series is going to launch the DC UNIVERSE which will be available in fall 2018 as a digital service from Warner Bros. Fans who sign up for memberships will get “original live-action and animated series, classic TV series and films, a curated selection of comic books, breaking news, an expansive encyclopedia, and access to exclusive merchandise. Additional fan features include opportunities to connect with others in the DC community, earn premium rewards and participate in sweepstakes and contests.”
If this is good, then great, but at this point, I’m like, “Justice for Birds of Prey!”
What do you guys think? Are you also game for “fuck Batman”?
