Holy Tesseract, You Can Now Read a Never-Before-Seen Passage From A Wrinkle in Time
This seems fitting.
Madeleine L’Engle’s granddaughter Charlotte Jones Voiklis manages her late grandmother’s estate full-time, and discovered a game-changing piece of text several years ago while doing research for A Wrinkle in Time‘s fiftieth anniversary edition.
In a cut passage published for the first time ever yesterday, Meg, Meg’s father, and Calvin discuss the evils of totalitarianism and the unavoidable failings of democracy, with Mr. Murphy saying “Security is a most seductive thing. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the greatest evil there is.”
The three-page scrapped passage was from one of L’Engle’s earliest drafts, and references Khrushchev, Mussolini, and Hitler; L’Engle scholar (rad job alert!) Suzanne Bray told The Wall Street Journal the text was likely cut for being “too political, or too obviously political.” Voiklis has shared the new passage with Catherine Hand, the producer on Disney’s in-development Wrinkle in Time adaptation, but there are no plans yet to include the rediscovered text in future editions of the book.
You can check out the full text for yourself over on The Wall Street Journal.
