Watch for X2 Parallels in the New X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer
The latest X-Men: Apocalypse trailer offers us a few more hints about the antagonist’s rise to power — and, of course, Oscar Isaac gets a chance to shine by delivering a few new lines as that villain. Meanwhile, James McAvoy’s Xavier foreshadows a line that we have heard before: “I feel a great swell of pity for the poor soul that comes to my school looking for trouble.”
When I say “foreshadows,” I mean “he repeats exactly the same line, word for word.” The conversation between Magneto and Xavier at the beginning of this trailer is almost completely identical to the one that appears between that same pair in this old X2 trailer:
(Sidebar: isn’t it weird how goofy that X2 trailer looks in comparison? I thought that movie was so cool and gritty and bad-ass at the time, but it looks so corny now! Superhero movies have changed a lot, huh?)
The X2 parallel is obviously intentional — it’s not a bad thing to invoke X2, which was my personal favorite of the former X-Men movies. X3, on the other hand… well, that mess is the reason why we have to reboot everything again and reset the clock back. Still, it’s weird to see two actors recreating a scene that already got delivered so beautifully the first time around. Do you think James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender can pull it off? X2 is basically Shakespeare so I guess it’s fine to recreate it again and again … still kind of strange, though.
Also, are these even X-Men movies without Wolverine??? And lastly, where’s Jubilee? I wanted her to be in this trailer so bad — I can’t wait to see Lana Condor’s take on the role, since it sounds amazing.
