If the excitement over the tiny glimpse of a potential same-sex couple in Finding Dory taught us anything, it’s that children’s media needs more LGBTQIA representation.
In comes Nickelodeon’s The Loud House, a show about a boy named Lincoln living in a house with ten sisters. In an episode that will air this Wednesday, Lincoln’s friend Clyde McBride will come over for a sleepover accompanied by his two overprotective fathers who are adorably having a tough time watching their son grow up. You can watch the clip above for this moment, as Lincoln looks at the audience and says, “time to make history.”
While Nickelodeon has featured same-sex relationships in the past like Korrasami (confirmed in Tumblr posts by the creators) and Mr. Simmons from Hey Arnold! (confirmed by creator Craig Bartlett but never explicitly stated in the show), news sources report this is the first time the channel has included a married same-sex couple. Additionally, there’s no ambiguity about their marriage and the McBride family is presented as a sweet, caring unit rather than a punchline.
While we only have a short clip, I really like how the show approached this! A couple of artists from The Loud House have tweeted their support and excitement with #LoudandProud. What do you think of the McBrides?
