Actually, George Lucas Is Not Hiding 50 Hours of Footage From Us

Never Mind

This week, we — along with much of the Internet — posted about a quote made by George Lucas in which he implied that there were “50 hours” of unproduced footage for a live-action Star Wars series collecting dust on his shelf. But as it turns out, that is not the case at all. More like 50 hours worth of scripts that have never been shot at all. Well, that is much less disappointing than having 50 hours of footage in the can, waiting to be Lucas-ized.

Here is what made us jump to the conclusion that a Star Wars series had been shot and then hidden away:

We have 50 hours and we’re just waiting to figure out a different way of making movies, a different technology we can use … to make it feasible to shoot the show…When we do figure this problem out it will dramatically affect a lot of movies. Right now it looks like the Star Wars features.

So, naturally, when there are “50 hours” that “[look] like the Star Wars features,” we assumed that Lucas was referring to something visual, such as video. But according to io9, who spoke directly with Lucasfilm‘s PR team, he was referring to the stories and scripts. Oh. Well, at least that’s something with the potential to be really excellent and it hasn’t been completely shelved. And maybe — we can hope — that these scripts go through an extensive draft phase before being turned into a really expensive, epic series that we will regret looking forward to as soon the actors start talking.
