Olly Moss’ New Harry Potter Covers Are Clever and Spellbinding
Graphic designer Olly Moss has tons of fantastic work under his belt, including these new Harry Potter covers he created in collaboration with Pottermore for the new eBooks.
The covers aren’t only wonderfully vivid, they also employ a really interesting double image approach. Moss took extra care to ensure that none of the covers would spoil the books, which is why I think the cover of The Chamber of Secrets is probably a favorite. Not only does it captures the tone really well, it appeals to fans who’ll recognize the Basilisk reference without spoiling it for new readers. Moss says,
I like things to have more than one layer. The initial “oh that’s an attractive image” then it’s got a secondary reveal when you look closer. It’s something that I’ve always enjoyed doing…This is a world where things often seem quite mundane on the surface and then have a secondary reveal. I love coming up with those images because it makes me feel that no one’s done this before—no one’s seen something in this specific way.
If you or a friend want to grab an ebook version of the series, Moss’ version will be available in 2016 worldwide. If you’re more of a physical book person, Jim Kay‘s recent illustrated edition would also make for a wonderful Christmas present. If you or your friend hate reading, grab the audio version narrated by Stephen Fry. Harry Potter for everyone!
It’s very apparent that Moss is huge fan of the books and a lot of love went into these covers. You can read about his process and favorite character at the full interview on Pottermore. What do you think about the new covers?
