Nickelodeon Sets Us Up the Nostalgia Bomb, Announces Massive 90s Nicktoons Movie
Only 90s kids etc. etc.
Nickelodeon is gearing up to drop the biggest nostalgia bomb in the history of forever. They’re developing a movie based on all of their biggest Nicktoons of the past 25 years. That list includes Rocko’s Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, Hey Arnold, and Doug. You can expect all of them to meet in what’s described as a hybrid movie between live-action and animation a la Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Jared Hess, who co-directed and wrote Napoleon Dynamite has been tapped to helm this project. Sharing co-writing credits on this project is Hess’ wife and creative partner Jarusha Hess. Perhaps most surprising of all is that it’s all being produced by Mary Parent (kind of an appropriate name, isn’t it), who produced The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, Pacific Rim, and… The Revenant. I know, right?
I personally remain cautiously guarded about whether the movie will be good or not. Mashing up animation and live-action can and often does go wrong. If the similarity to Who Framed Roger Rabbit holds true, then maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance this movie might set off the franchise Nickelodeon is undoubtedly hoping for.
