The 90th Annual Oscar Nominations Are Out, and the More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same
The nominations for the 90th Annual Academy Awards were announced this morning in Los Angeles, and there are some pretty great things to celebrate! There are also some things that remain disappointingly the same. You can check out the full broadcast courtesy of ABC in the video above!
TMS fave Guillermo del Toro’s film The Shape of Water leads on nominations with a total of 13, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Sally Hawkins, and Best Writing for its original screenplay, written by del Toro along with Vanessa Taylor.
However there’s plenty of love for two of the films we were really rooting for this year. Get Out was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (Jordan Peele), Best Actor for Daniel Kaluuya, and Best Writing (also Jordan Peele). Lady Bird was nominated in all the same categories as well, with Greta Gerwig pulling double-duty as a Best Director and Best Writing nominee, and Saoirse Ronan getting a nom for Best Actress.
This year is also the first time a woman has been nominated for Best Cinematography! Rachel Morrison makes history for her work as the Director of Photography on Netflix’s Mudbound, and is nominated alongside Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049), Bruno Delbonnel (Darkest Hour), Hoyte Van Hoytema (Dunkirk) and Dan Laustsen (The Shape of Water).
Two of the nominees for Best Animated Feature, Coco and The Breadwinner, were not only two of my favorite films of the year, but they both center children of color, which is pretty damn rad. Oh, and if “Remember Me” from Coco (Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez) doesn’t win the music category for Best Original Song, I just give up. I will weep the way I did at the end of that movie.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi got nominated in many of the categories you might expect, including a nod for John Williams for his gorgeous Original Score. But the happiest geek surprise for me was Logan getting nominated for its screenplay, written by Scott Frank & James Mangold and Michael Green.
One snub that I’m not surprised by, but am disappointed in? I was hoping against hope that Dafne Keen, who did amazing work playing Laura/X-23 in Logan would’ve scored a nod. Sadly, that was a no-go, and that amazing film seemed largely forgotten about by the year’s end in the wake of the end-of-the-year Oscar bait films.
Also disappointing? The fact that Dee Rees wasn’t nominated in the Directing category for her work on Mudbound, despite the acclaim that film has received. There’s no love for women of color in the Best Actress category, either. Many of the categories remain completely male, and the Oscars are definitely still overwhelmingly “so white.”
But we’re inching forward, so that’s progress in Hollywood, I guess.
