Oscar Predictions: Give Glenn Close Her Oscar
While I firmly believe that we should have given Glenn Close her Oscar years ago for The Big Chill, this weekend could finally correct that mistake. The Academy Awards are nearly upon us and I have a lot of thoughts on who is going to win in other categories as well. By the way, everyone I want to win isn’t going to because this award season has been a dumpster fire and nothing makes sense (except Glenn Close).
So, what do we have to look forward to this weekend? People thinking that Bohemian Rhapsody is a great movie and Bradley Cooper singing “Shallow” without his Jackson Maine voice! What is even the point?
Thanks to Variety for their full list of nominees, we can see who is up for the big awards and who we want to win out of the list! Who we think will win is bolded; our own picks are explained.
Best Picture:
“Black Panther”
“BlacKkKlansman”
“Bohemian Rhapsody”
“The Favourite”
“Green Book”
“Roma”
“A Star Is Born”
“Vice”
Who do I want to win? BlacKkKlansman or Black Panther, but the reality of the situation is that we’re probably going to have to sit through a Bohemian Rhapsody or Green Book win and honestly, we should probably just cancel the entire ceremony now.
Lead Actor:
Christian Bale, “Vice”
Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”
Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate”
Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
Honestly, I’d take a Bradley Cooper win because he managed to make Jackson Maine a character that we actually cared about, a thing that no other version of A Star is Born managed to achieve. That being said, it has been a back and forth between Rami Malek and Christian Bale all season so a surprise Bradley Cooper win would be … rare. It’s likely going to be Malek’s night.
Lead Actress:
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma”
Glenn Close, “The Wife”
Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”
Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born”
Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Look, they already tied once this season, what’s to say that they won’t tie again? While I want it to be Glenn Close’s win, I know that Lady Gaga in A Star is Born is one of the best performances of the season. It’s just that Close in The Wife took my heart and ripped it in two and she was perfect. It’s also more than probably Hollywood will award Close her much-deserved first Best Actress Oscar. How has it not given her 10 of these before?
Supporting Actor:
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”
Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman”
Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born”
Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Sam Rockwell, “Vice”
A big “ugh why are you so talented and in a terrible movie” goes out to Mahershala Ali for his role in Green Book because he deserves to be recognized for his talent but that movie deserves nothing. So I want Sam Elliot to go home with a win, but he won’t and I’ll be mad about it.
Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams, “Vice”
Marina de Tavira, “Roma”
Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”
Emma Stone, “The Favourite”
Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
This is no one else’s category, sorry again to Amy Adams. Sure, I also love The Favourite, and I want all the amazingly talented women in it to go home with all of the awards, but this is Regina King’s year.
Director:
Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman”
Pawel Pawlikowski, “Cold War”
Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite”
Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma”
Adam McKay, “Vice”
Should Spike Lee finally have a win? Probably, but it is going to go to Alfonso Cuarón for Roma which is also deserved.
Animated Feature:
“Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird
“Isle of Dogs,” Wes Anderson
“Mirai,” Mamoru Hosoda
“Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Rich Moore, Phil Johnston
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman
There is no other film nominated. I only know about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This is their win. Nothing else matters. (That’s mean, I love all these movies, but it is going to Spider-Man and I’m so happy for Miles Morales and my husband, sad Peter Parker.)
Adapted Screenplay:
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
“BlacKkKlansman,” Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee
“Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty
“If Beale Street Could Talk,” Barry Jenkins
“A Star Is Born,” Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters
While I believe this movie was ROBBED in overall Oscars recognition, If Beale Street Could Talk deserves to win at least Best Adapted Screenplay because it is truly one of the most beautiful films from 2018.
Original Screenplay:
“The Favourite,” Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara
“First Reformed,” Paul Schrader
“Green Book,” Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly
“Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón
“Vice,” Adam McKay
Have you seen The Favourite? Of course, it should win. Will Green Book win? Theoretically, but I’m not putting that energy out into the universe.
Original Song:
“All The Stars” from “Black Panther” by Kendrick Lamar, SZA
“I’ll Fight” from “RBG” by Diane Warren, Jennifer Hudson
“The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman
“Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Benjamin Rice
“When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch
I truly wanted to write “lol” because it is going to “Shallow” and there is nothing we can do about it because we’re all still out here screaming along to it in public. Damn you, Lady Gaga!
