Oscars 90 a Big Night for Latinx, the LGBTQ Community, and the Places Where They Intersect
It isn’t only gender bias that’s getting a well-deserved spotlight at tonight’s Oscars. The Latinx community has a lot to be proud of tonight, as does the queer community…not to mention a historic moment for Latinx trans women.
When presenting the award for Best Production Design (which went to the team from The Shape of Water) Lupita Nyong’o and Kumail Nanjiani started off by humorously talking about both being immigrants, as well as the fact that the film industry is all about dreams, in order to express their support for Dreamers. Coco had a big evening tonight, too! After Gael Garcia Bernal kicked off an awesome, vibrant performance of the film’s nominated song, “Remember Me,” the film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature! Not only were the shout-outs to Mexico awesome, I couldn’t help but notice that two of the four people who accepted the award were queer and thanked their same-sex spouses:
And then, of course, tonight was a historic evening in large part to the big win for Chile’s A Fantastic Woman, which took home the award for Best Foreign Film, and whose star Daniella Vega became the first transgender presenter at the Oscars when she introduced Sufjan Stevens performing his song from the film Call Me By Your Name.
Oh yeah, and then Call Me By Your Name‘s James Ivory won Best Adapted Screenplay for the film. Yay, gay films!
This queer Latina has a lot to be happy about today!
