Chris-Rachael Oseland, aka Kitchen Overlord, is pretty amazing at taking your favorite geek icons and making them into adorable, delicious treats, particularly breads and stuffed rolls. These 1-Up mushrooms might be her cutest creation yet, and seem surprisingly easy to make considering that they look exactly like the ones that you find in the Mario franchise. I suddenly feel overcome with the desire to host a Nintendo-themed party just so I have a valid excuse to try my hand at these.

In order to make the recipe, you’ll need the following:

  • 1 can refrigerated biscuits
  • 1 cup mushrooms, diced
  • ½ cup onions, diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp Italian Seasoning
  • 20 slices pepperoni
  • 5 slices mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup basil pesto
  • 6 drops green food coloring
  • edible ball bearings

That’s right, ball bearings that you can eat. At some point, humans decided to make those. Genius!

While they look fancy, the mushrooms are actually pretty simple to make. Flatten out one of those instant biscuits and fill it with cheese, pepperoni and a mixture of seasoned mushrooms and onions, turning them into a pizza pocket/muffin hyprid. The only really tricky part is getting the mushrooms into that perfect — well, mushroom shape? According to Oseland, you have to pinch the stuffed roll into a ball, then turn it pinch-side down into a mini muffin tray. I would have never even thought to do that, but that’s probably why I’m only a lowly kitchen serf, not an overlord.

Once the mushrooms are cooked, you can apply the finishing touches of basil pesto and mozzarella cheese spots, and voila — you’re eating gourmet pizza rolls that pay homage to Mario. If you need more help, Oseland offers a step-by-step guide on Kitchen Overlord. While we can’t say for sure if the resulting meal will actually give you an extra life, we do urge readers to err on the side of caution and not test that theory.

On the subject of whether or not it’s cannibalism for Toadstool and similarly playable mushroom characters to eat these, Oseland has this to say: it’s not, because these are, erm, “magically transformed” mushrooms.

“They can’t help that their new form is delicious. The kindest thing you can do for them now is put them out of their misery in three or four quick bites.”

Well, if it’s an act of mercy… yeah, I can definitely do that.
