Pacific Rim 2 Cancels the Apocalypse; Production Has “Halted Indefinitely”
According to a report from Hollywood Reporter, Pacific Rim‘s sequel has been “halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).” So much for those rumors of a crossover between Pacific Rim and the latter-day Godzilla films. Sounds like the only movie monster mash-up in the works will pan out between Godzilla and King Kong in Kong: Skull Island.
But why? Disagreements between Universal and Legendary Pictures, mostly based on the failure of the films Blackhat and Seventh Son. Even though Pacific Rim did well overseas, particularly in China, it was quite costly to make and the sequel doesn’t feel enough like a sure thing to sway its potential backers. In other words, the failure of two unrelated films has tightened the fists of the film’s studios, which is a damn shame, and also a great example of how opaque and random Hollywood’s funding structures seem at times.
If monster movies make a bunch of big bucks this coming year, then it sounds like Pacific Rim 2 may resurface. Are you excited about Kong? Or are you too busy feeling devastated by this Pacific Rim news?
