Legendary Pictures CEO Says Pacific Rim 2 Could Happen, But They’re Not Rushing It

Meanwhile...

Perhaps this is just me, but it’s refreshing to hear someone in Hollywood say they’re not going to make a sequel just for the sake of making a sequel. As we’ve reported previously, Guillermo del Toro has been working on the screenplay for Pacific Rim 2, and Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull has said the studio’s open to it. This week, in an interview with I Am Rogue, Tull further addressed the sequel rumors, explaining that if they give the movie the greenlight, they’re going to take their time and get it right.

Here’s the deal. We’re very close with Guillermo. He’s doing Crimson Peak for us right now. With the amount of money that we did on Pacific Rim, over $400 million, it didn’t quite hit our expectations, but it did better than a lot of other films. If there’s another great story to tell with Guillermo then we’re all over it because we think it’s really hard to create one of these things from scratch. The movie did really well on home video and merchandise, and it certainly has a big international following. We’re not just going to do Pacific Rim 2 just to do it. Right now we’re talking to Guillermo del Toro. If we can crack the story, we all think it’s great, and it’s him at the helm, then fantastic. But right now there’s nothing going on officially to proclaim.

And that’s fine by me. I loved Pacific Rim, but as much as I’d be down for a follow-up, I don’t want anything but a worthy successor. If the Precursors could wait millions of years before attempting a second invasion of Earth, I, too, can be patient.

What say you guys? Are you interested in a Pacific Rim sequel? Or was one movie enough?
