‘Peacemaker’ Funko Pops Forget the Show’s Female Characters
No Adebayo or Harcourt? No thanks.
If there’s two things we here at The Mary Sue love, it’s HBO Max’s Peacemaker and our ever-growing collection of Funko Pops. So naturally, when Funko announced a Peacemaker series, we were all in. Among the five figures available are Peacemaker with Eagly, Peacemaker in tighty-whities, Judomaster, Vigilante, and Eagly holding an American flag. They’re fantastic and I have to stop myself from buying all of them.
But there’s a glaring absence in this line-up, and that’s the lack of any female characters. There’s no Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), who is arguably the second lead of the series, and no Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) either. Other supporting characters, like Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) and John Economos (Steve Agee) are also not represented. Yet a relatively minor character Judomaster gets a Pop and Peacemaker and Eagly get two each. And still no women? Not even the Goff Butterfly?!? I call shenanigans.
This is the first wave of Peacemaker Pops, so we could see the rest of the cast in future releases. For now, this first wave is available for pre-order. Still, it’s a bummer to see female characters get short shrift in merchandise. And it’s a reminder that not so long ago (2015 to be exact) major female characters like Black Widow were excluded or sidelined from major merchandise. A former Marvel employee wrote an op-ed for this website, where she called Disney and Marvel for sexism. She wrote, “Disney bought Marvel and Lucasfilm because they wanted to access the male market. To achieve this goal, they allocate less to Marvel’s female demo, and even less to a unisex one. They won’t be interested in changing how they work until consumers understand what’s going on.”
We’re still hopeful that Funko will eventually role out the next wave of Peacemaker Pops, and it will include the show’s women. Anything less would be a disappointment.
