Peggy Carter Dons the Shield as Captain America in Exiles #3
Agent Carter's got powers, y'all.
You can’t keep a good agent down. Peggy Carter returns to comics in the upcoming issue of Exiles #3 with a whole new look and a dose of super-soldier serum, taking on the mantle of Captain America herself. This is another exciting incarnation of the beloved heroine who first had us fangirling in in Captain America: The First Avenger. Anchored by Hayley Atwell’s stellar performance, Peggy made a huge impression in the male-dominated world of the MCU. Her popularity led to the delightful period spy series Agent Carter on ABC, which was sadly cancelled after two seasons.
But nothing, not even death, can keep Peggy down for long. She resurfaces next month in Exiles #3, the new series by Saladin Ahmed (Black Bolt) and Javier Rodriguez (Batgirl: Year One). Exiles draws on characters and storylines from all across the Marvel Multiverse, bringing together fan favorites like Blink, Kamala Khan, and Valkyrie. Ahmed and Rodriguez adapted the Peggy-as-Cap character from the Marvel Puzzle Quest mobile game, which introduced a timeline where Steve Rogers is assassinated and Peggy takes the super serum and assumes the role of Captain America…despite being British. I guess “Captain Britannica” just doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
“One of the delights of this series is that really any concept that occurs to people or that Marvel’s done in any nook or cranny of its many universes is available to us,” Ahmed tells Entertainment Weekly, “There’s a World War II scene, a confrontation with the Red Skull, in Exiles #3, so obviously that requires some version of Cap. Of all places, the Marvel Puzzle Quest video game had a really popular character design for Peggy Carter as Captain America in a reality where Steve Rogers is killed and Peggy has taken the super-soldier serum in his place. As soon as I saw that, I was like ‘Yes, okay, perfect.’ There’s something about Peggy taking over the role of Cap that’s super-compelling.”
