SNL’s Pete Davidson Got Queer Eyed and I Just Want This to Be a Full Episode
When I saw this video of Pete Davidson going shopping with Tan France from the Queer Eye reboot, I assumed it was a sketch, maybe one of the cut-for-time sketches SNL releases on YouTube during the week. Instead, it’s something so much better. In the clip above, Tan is just giving Davidson the real Queer Eye treatment, doing what Tan does best: using clothing to highlight a guy’s personality and tackle self-esteem issues.
Davidson has been open about his history of substance abuse and mental illness, even discussing his diagnosis of borderline personality disorder on SNL. Here, when describing his style choices to France, he’s pretty raw with his insecurities, saying that “I don’t have even have mirrors in my house because I don’t like my face.” Have you ever heard a more Queer Eye statement than that?
He also tells France that his style (which France describes as “a lot of look”) is pretty much based around what 18-year-old boys think is cool because that age was “the last time [he] grew up.” It says a lot that a denim jacket and a trenchcoat make Davidson feel like someone who “could run a business.”
With this video, we don’t get the full transformative effect that comes from all the Queer Eye guys working together (imagine Karamo talking Davidson through his relationship insecurities or Antoni teaching him to arrange grapefruit on a plate!), but it’s clear that Davidson is approaching this shopping trip with the same genuine desire for growth that we see on the show. Hey SNL, is it too late to film an entire episode of this?
