If you’re anything like me, then you’ve been exceedingly happy about the fact that we’ve now entered the spookiest month of the year. Halloween is like Christmas for me, and I suspect that many of you feel the same way. So, when I saw that the trailer for the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series had come out, it felt kind of like getting a present a little early. If, you know, that present was a pair of socks or something. Functional. Present. Useable. But … socks. Anyway.
This morning, Disney shared the new teaser trailer through Twitter. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales looks to be pretty darn spooky, as it’s certainly leaning on that dark ghost story aesthetic. Javier Bardem seems to be really relishing his role here as a zombie-looking Captain Salazar. The premise of the movie revolves (as usual) around Captain Jack Sparrow’s search for some treasure and his conflict with his rival pirates. This time, he’s after the Trident of Poseidon, which is said to grant its possessor complete control of the seas. Captain Salazar is looking to kill all the pirates (which just so happens to include Captain Jack, don’t you know), so yeah, having a trident that controls the seas might just help him do that.
Interestingly enough, after being absent from the film series’ fourth installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Orlando Bloom will be returning to reprise his role as Will Turner/Davy Jones. It’ll be interesting to see what he’s been up to since he became captain of the Flying Dutchman in At World’s End. He’ll be coming back with Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa and Kevin McNally as Gibbs, Sparrow’s first mate.
Of course, also returning is Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. It’s going to be incredibly difficult to look past the recent allegations surrounding him and Amber Heard. This isn’t to say that one should look past those allegations, but rather, now that there’s a side of Depp that has entered the public consciousness, it’ll be interesting to see what effects these allegations may have on the public’s opinion of his performance.
On the one hand, it’s disappointing to think that such a long-running beloved franchise is now tarnished by the actions of one of its major stars. On the other, it’s super freaking important that things like these come to light. It’s important that we not only acknowledge the harmful actions of the artists we love so much, but we should also hold them responsible for conducting them.
Everything regarding Depp aside, the movie looks promising. I am, as ever, weary (and wary) of sequels, especially for film series that go beyond the trilogy format. The first three Pirates movies worked well, provided you could look past a handful of problems. The fourth didn’t quite hit, however, and it’s definitely got me wondering just what this fifth movie might shake out to be in the end.
