New Characters, Tons of Gameplay Shown for Pokémon Fighting Game Pokkén Tournament
I want this to be the very best.
(Be aware of some NSFW commentary.)
Nintendo’s been awfully buddy-buddy with Bandai Namco lately with the two working together on the development of the new Smash Bros. titles, which wound up featuring Pacman. They’ve got another joint fighting game effort coming our way in the form of Pokkén Tournament, which is super effective at getting us all excited.
As someone who got into Smash Bros. in the first place in 1999 due to the draw of using Pikachu in a non-turn-based competition, I’m very invested in Pokkén Tournament. It’s much more of a standard 3D fighter than Nintendo’s other flagship fighting game, but it looks like there’s still a good degree of freedom of movement, which is one of the things I love so much about Smash as compared to traditional 2- and 3D fighting games.
Originally, not much was known about the game’s roster and whether it would feature Pokémon of various skill sets and body types that would be unusual in a fighting game. Now, an hour-long stream by Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu and Tekken’s own Katsuhiro Harada has confirmed that Pikachu (of course) and four-legged Suicune will be among the selectable fighters. So far, Gardevoir, Machamp, Blaziken, and Lucario are also known to be in the game as well as smaller, non-playable support Pokémon that can be called in for assistance.
Take a look at the video above and whip yourself up into a hype frenzy over the idea of an official Pokémon fighting game, and then be incredibly sad that the game doesn’t have a home console release date yet. It’s hitting arcades first, but not much is known about its appearance on a Nintendo console aside from that it’s happening at some point.
