We’re Getting a Power Rangers Movie Reboot From Lionsgate Whether Anyone Wants That or Not
Get ready for the inevitable Voltron movie reboot from a competing studio.
Just when you thought Hollywood would finally run out of ways to pillage your childhood after the Ninja Turtles movie, Lionsgate has announced that they’ve got a Power Rangers franchise starter in the works. At least Power Rangers has already been doing a pretty decent job of ruining itself with every new TV iteration, so you’ve got that to soften the blow, right?
I mean, it’s not like Power Rangers was ever highly refined art, but neither were most of the TV shows you watched as a kid that have been made into movies. Will we get a campy, self-aware Power Rangers movie that’s fun to laugh at for adults who watched as children? Will we get a gritty reboot? Would a gritty reboot just come off like a campy, self-aware take that would be fun for us to laugh at? (Probably.)
Either way, Saban, the owner of the Power Rangers, had this to say in a statement, according to Variety:
Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level. They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from ‘The Hunger Games’ to ‘Twilight’ and ‘Divergent.’
Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer also said:
We’re thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise. The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever.
As someone who saw the first Power Rangers movie in theaters back in 1995 and will admit to it in public, I’m kind of excited for this. It’s not going to be good, but neither was the old movie, and I’m still endlessly entertained by its existence.
If it brings us more comedic gold like this, how can anyone not be excited?
