The Actual Power Rangers Reboot Movie Sounds Completely Absurd, and We’re So In
Magic wand, make my campiness grow!
Some potential leaked character details from the upcoming Power Rangers reboot movie sound like things may be going in the “gritty” direction like that “fan” film from a few months back, but maybe in a good way? I’m one hundred percent up for a Power Rangers movie that deliberately leans so serious it falls and crashes into funny and campy, and if these character descriptions aren’t meant to be funny, I don’t know what is.
The unnamed sources (read: this may very well be complete nonsense) of Heroic Hollywood say original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers villain Rita Repulsa will return as the main antagonist for the reboot, but that’s not the outlandish part. Here’s the character description they provided:
A huntress. A striking, yet subtly alien-looking woman. She carries a metallic staff topped with a distinctive crescent shape. Advances with a soldier’s confidence, guided by some sort of compass… Her staff is actually a device of immense power. She points it at the ground. Heads emerge, built layer upon layer like 3-D printing, made from the earth itself… The staff’s technology grants her the ability to create humanoid figures, soulless and robotic.
Everything about that sounds so perfectly over the top I can’t help but love it, though from a comedic standpoint, it’s a bit disappointing it’s just what the “source” said about the character and not an official bio from Saban or Lionsgate. Zordon got a shout out as well, as he’ll apparently battle Rita in prehistoric times before becoming the Power Rangers’ own dinosaur-themed Nick Fury in the modern day. He was described like this:
Though alien, he looks like a man in his 50s. Sinewy and strong, as if carved from some root that refused to die. A being of integrity and iron will.
Hopefully the cheese factor in these descriptions is reflective of the content in the movie itself, because if they really did do a “dark” power rangers movie, self-awareness and humor could actually make it really great. I mean, it’s not like there’s any way at this point you could ruin Power Rangers with too much cheesiness. Remember when this happened?
Seriously, do you remember it? I’m just checking to make sure I’m not the only one, because that would be concerning.
