That Powerpuff Girls Reboot Is Officially Official For 2016
sugar, spice, butt-whoopin'
We’ve known for a while that a reboot of The Powerpuff Girls was headed our way come 2016. Now we know for double-sure: Cartoon Network’s announced the show as part of their 2015-2016 slate. Adventure Time’s Nick Jennings will serve as an executive producer. You can revel in all of this further with the press release from CN:
Slated for a 2016 launch, The Powerpuff Girls reboot will include an all-new television series produced by Cartoon Network Studios and a full licensing program slated to roll out across all regions. One of the network’s most enduring original series, The Powerpuff Girls, which debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998, earned two Emmy Awards, five nominations and countless animation honors throughout its 78-episode run. The Powerpuff Girls centers on three sugar-coated superheroes — Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup — whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime. Emmy and BAFTA award winner Nick Jennings (Adventure Time) is on board as executive producer.
And as Victoria wrote back when we first heard the news in June:
Of course, this isn’t the first new Powerpuff series to make it to television since the original Emmy-winning series first went off the air in 2005. There was a tenth anniversary special on Cartoon Network in 2009, as well as a 2006 Japanese magical girl anime (PPGZ) that never made it to American television.
And, of course, there was this year’s TV special that aired in January, Dance Pantsed. It’s unknown whether this new series will utilize the same CGI style, or if original PPG creator Craig McCracken will once again have an input.
The show will make its return 18 years after the first episodes started airing.
