Can We Just Let Priyanka Chopra and Her Legs Live?

In news that isn’t surprising but incredibly frustrating, actress Priyanka Chopra was called disrespectful and indecent for her attire when meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

After Chopra shared the image above on Facebook, saying she was glad she could meet the PM while they were both in Berlin, social media users attacked her for not covering her legs and crossing her legs. Comment sections, as we all know, can be terrible and nonsensical. Criticisms of the way she sat and dressed fill the Facebook post, which attack her sense of decorum, modesty, and lack of understanding towards Indian culture.

A positive outlook is there’s also an outpouring of comments condemning this judgement, pointing out that shaming Chopra for her legs is more than a little misogynistic and unnecessary. Huffington Post India‘s listicle reaction points out the incredible low-stakes in this conversation (“National security is being compromised!”)

The Baywatch actress responded with an Instagram of her and her mother wearing dresses, captioned “Legs for days”, or as BBC reported, “legs for the day.” Chopra has dealt with objectification in the industry so much, even being told that she’s replaceable as a female actress. She’s become a successful actress and made amazing leaps in Asian representation. Can we just, like, let her live?
