The 2016 PlayStation Experience Showcases Gaming Heroines in The Last of Us Part II, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Today is the first day of 2016’s PlayStation Experience event, and we’ve already gotten a slew of new game announcements and trailers. Up top, there’s an embed of the live-stream of the event’s ongoing panels, if you’d like to watch the stream. To get you all caught up, here are some of the super-cool gaming heroines showcased in trailers from today’s PSX 2016 event.
First up, we’ve got the official trailer for The Last of Us: Part II, Naughty Dog’s sequel to the hit zombie game of 2013. As the trailer shows, Ellie is all grown up now, and more than ready to keep facing down the world’s terrors. Will we get to play as Ellie for the entire game this time around, as opposed to just in one scene (and the DLC)? Time will tell… but this trailer certainly focuses on her, so it seems like a promising bet that this game will be about Ellie’s story, with Joel playing more of a backseat role.
UPDATE on 12/3/16 at 5:15 PM: It’s been confirmed: you play as Ellie in The Last of Us Part II!!
Next up, we’ve got an official confirmation of the rumors that Marvel vs. Capcom was about to announce a sequel. It’s called Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and the announcement trailer features a lot of very familiar faces: a super-shiny Megaman, Ryu of Street Fighter fame, and Iron Man. The brand new face introduced in this trailer, on the Marvel side of the fight: Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers! She’s wearing the outfit from the Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez era of the comic books. Very cool.
Also, as might already be obvious from the narrative set-up in this trailer, the game will feature two-versus-two battles in terms of how many characters you can pick for your side, as opposed to three-versus-three, like in MvC 3. According to Kotaku, the game will also be introducing an “Infinity Stone” mechanic that will “influence the outcome of battle.” Hmm!
Speaking of super-rad heroines, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (a.k.a. Uncharted 5) got officially announced as well, and it won’t be starring our old friend Nathan Drake. Instead, fan favorite Chloe Frazier will be the heroine of the game, alongside Nadine Ross! So, two women heroines will be fronting this game, which is a refreshing change for the franchise; plus, both characters are well-loved by the fanbase, so it’s not even a risky choice to make. Here’s the trailer, which is very long and features a lot of cool moments for our heroine Chloe:
Looks like PlayStation is ramping up for some very compelling woman-fronted games!
