Where my Whovians at?
Hey, this is Teresa Jusino from The Mary Sue and welcome to Pull Wisely. The Eighth Doctor has come to Titan Comics in their Doctor Who line – The Eighth Doctor #1 with a story called “The Pictures of Josephine Day,” with a story by George Mann and art by Emma Vieceli.
Picture it: A modern Welsh village. And there’s a girl squatting in a house, painting. She’s really hip, hair dyed, awesome-looking chick, rocking her painting skills, when all of a sudden, the Eighth Doctor shows up. And apparently, she’s in “his house.” Meanwhile, she’s painting these paintings of things that a girl in a Welsh village usually wouldn’t paint, like rock monsters, like robots, like alien beings. One of her neighbors comes over and says Oh my God, there are these rock monsters in the village green, herding everybody into the center of the village! What are we going to do?” They realize that the monsters are actually coming out of Josie’s paintings.
Some of you might have mixed feelings about the Eighth Doctor TV movie. Some of you really like it and love the Eighth Doctor, others of you are like Ehhh, I don’t know, they kind of ruined Doctor Who, and half human, what the hell is going on?! But in this issue, the Doctor is done with as much wonder as you’d expect from the Doctor. He’s really curious, he’s really animated, and he’s very much interested in finding out what’s going on with these rock monsters in town.
And Josie Day is really, really cool. In addition to her awesome fashion sense and her artsy vibe, she’s really smart, she’s really talented, and she doesn’t take crap. Watching her go off with the Doctor to have adventures will be really cool to see.
George Mann’s story is really well paced. It’s fun, it’s fast, there’s lots going on…but it’s all very easy to understand. There’s something about a simple, to-the-point Doctor story that will always have my heart, and this is one of those.
Meanwhile, Emma Vieceli’s art is beautiful. It brings a great warmth to the Doctor Who universe. I have to give a shout-out to Hi-Fi, who did the colors on this. The colors are really beautiful and bright, and also warm.
All in all, you should definitely pick this up if you are a Doctor Who fan – and even if you’re not. This is a great jumping-on point.

And now, here’s our Top 5 Comics Recommendations for the week!
Monstress #1 – written by Marjorie Liu, with art by Sana Takeda, published by Image. I heard Marjorie Liu talking about this book at New York Comic Con this year, and it sounds awesome! It’s the story of a young girl who has a psychic link to a powerful monster, and Image describes the book as “Steampunk meets Kaiju.” If monsters, magic, and Steampunk don’t sell you (and if it doesn’t, what’s wrong with you), perhaps the fact that it’s Liu’s first creator-owned comic and has a female protagonist, and two talented Asian women at the helm will!
Max Ride: Ultimate Flight #1 – written by Jody Houser (based on the YA books by James Patterson), with art by RB Silva, published by Marvel. We had the exclusive announcement (as well as an interview with writer, Jody Houser) of this title back in August, and now it’s finally here! The first installment of the Max Ride story at Marvel was pretty awesome, and I’m now totally emotionally invested in the well-being of Max and The Flock. This second chapter in the story of a team of genetically enhanced teens is guaranteed to be epic!
This Damned Band #4 – written by Paul Cornell, with art by Tony Parker, published by Dark Horse. This is a great book if you a) like 1970s rock (or, rather, the 1970s rock lifestyle), b) like supernatural stories featuring Satan himself, or c) are a fan of Paul Cornell’s magical ability to make even über-masculine, misogynistic subject matter palatable to a feminist sensibility by making sure to include fleshed-out female characters, and having the men be complicated enough that they can’t be dismissed as one-note douchebags. This is #4 in a 6-part limited series, so if you haven’t been reading it up until now, definitely go back and catch up!
Harley Quinn & Power Girl #5 – written by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Amanda Conner, with art by Stephane Roux, published by DC. We’re almost at the end of this fun, hilarious, and wacky team-up between Harley Quinn and Power Girl, which takes place in the gutter between panels 3 and 4 of page 20 of Harley Quinn #12. All I have to say is that the DC tagline for this issue is, “The battle against Oreth Odeox reaches its climax-and so does WAIT WAIT NO STOP RIGHT THERE!” Now stop what you’re doing, and go buy it.
Paper Girls #2 – written by Brian K. Vaughan, with art by Cliff Chang, published by Image. THIS. BOOK. IS. AWESOME. It only has one other issue out and it’s already awesome. Seriously – badass, adventurous girls who deliver newspapers in the 1980s? Check. Possible alien invasion? Check. Possible time travel? Check. Chang’s art is amazing in this, and he breathes wonderful, energetic life into Vaughan’s already compelling characters. I kinda want these Paper Girls to hang out with the Lumberjanes in a massive crossover event. BOOM! Image. Make it happen, and make the world a better place. This title is pull-list material, people.
Now that I’ve had my say, what are you all reading this week? Let’s talk comics and recommendations in the comments below, and I’ll see you all tomorrow at the comics shop!
Yes, all of you. Every single one of you. What? I’m totally not spying on you, what are you even talking about? *slinks away*
