Punk Goes 8-Bit: Because Chiptunes Make Everything Better
Punk needs more beep boop boop beeps.
Last Friday, Tampa based punk and ska label Pinhead Records released a compilation of classic rock punk songs for free on their Bandcamp page. Now, punk compilations aren’t all that unusual or fantastic. But this one? All of the songs have been redone in chiptune, and that’s pretty great.
You’ve seen punk compilations gracing the dollar bins of Hot Topic (also, why are you in Hot Topic?) and being given out at Vans Warped Tour for years now, but this is the first one we’ve seen done in 8-bit.
The twelve track digital album includes covers of songs by MXPX, Lagwagon, Face to Face, Strung Out, Pennywise, No Use For A Name, Blink 182, The Queers, The Offspring, NOFX, and my favorite of the bunch, Less Than Jake.
The compilation is available for free, but if you pay a little something, it’ll help the label (which is apparently run by a teenager out of his bedroom) get more download credits for their Bandcamp page. So be nice and give the kid a donation with your free download, because I don’t know about you, but I really want some more Less Than Jake in chiptune. 8-bit Hello Rockview?
Yes please.
