Ava DuVernay Tweets Queen Sugar Season 2 Has “A Whole New Squad of Dynamic Women Directors”

Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar, the groundbreaking show that had a team of all-female directors and lead other shows like Jessica Jones to follow, is gearing up for a second season which DuVernay says will have a “whole new squad of dynamic women.” The television adaptation of Natalie Baszile’s 2014 novel is currently up for a number of NAACP Image Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series.

In the tweet above, the A Wrinkle in Time director links to the Elle “2017 Women in TV Power List” where she speaks about her popular OWN series and her decision to have women direct. Here’s her amazing quote:

Why women only: “For the same reason the showrunners of Game of Thrones decided to hire all male directors for their last two seasons,” DuVernay says. “Because they could and they wanted to. I wanted to hire all incredible women. And I could. So I did.”

Queen Sugar actress Dawn-Lyen Gardner adds, “The female perspective powerfully impacts everything we see onscreen. It challenges the norms about ‘who gets to’ in our industry.”

Are you looking forward to Queen Sugar introducing the world to more talented female directors?
