In the directorial vacuum that’s emerged since Tim Miller dropped out of directing Deadpool 2, a fan-backed contender could soon emerge.

Fans of the Merc with a Mouth have started an online petition asking Quentin Tarantino to direct the next Deadpool feature. Tarantino’s an interesting choice, someone who feels at once appropriate and yet could possibly bring along his own share of difficulties to the production.

Keep in mind that Miller left the project over creative differences with the film’s star, Ryan Reynolds. Given the fact that Tarantino is something of a stalwart creative mind himself, it’s entirely possible their ideas of what Deadpool 2 should be may come in conflict. These are two strong minds who operate mostly on their creative vision for a project, and if they don’t sync up, nothing’s going to happen.

That being said, it’s also likely that they may harmonize completely, and the film may be that much stronger for it.

The petition’s creator, Carl Champion, Jr., addressed this possible conflict, writing in an update:

I think the most important concern is the fact that Tim Miller left the project over creative differences, and Quentin being Quentin and the creative force that he is, you’d run into the same problem. I absolutely agree with that notion, but I do believe that if Reynolds and Tarantino sat down and discussed their ideas for this sequel, they would love what each other had to say.

Tarantino, you may recall, is on the verge of retirement. He’s said before that his tenth film would be his last. With his latest feature (Hateful Eight) released last year, he only has a scant few films left if he keeps to his promise. I’m really not too sure how likely it’ll be that he wants to go out on a superhero flick–a sequel, at that. But who knows, really. Tarantino’s surprised many before, and to be completely honest, I would be pretty stoked to see what he can do with Deadpool.

Of course, this is all assuming that Tarantino is even offered the job in the first place. There are just so many hoops to jump through that there’s no telling what might happen–though to be honest, given the track record of most fan request-based petitions, the chances are super low.

Still, can you imagine what a Tarantino-esque Deadpool might look like? There has to be someone who’s mashed up or edited Deadpool to see what it’d look like already, right?
