R2-D2 One-Ups BB8 With His Own Airplane

Put your ass in an astromech.

What delusions of grandeur?

The battle over which droid is more endearing began yesterday at the Force Awakens panel at Star Wars Celebration, where we learned that J.J. Abrams had in fact sold his soul to whatever entity necessary to make the adorable rolling droid BB8 into a physical reality:

Seriously, how in the Hell?

R2, sensing some serious competition, has clearly taken the appropriate steps and will soon have his own airplane from Japan’s All Nippon Airways. The iconic astromech-themed 787-9 Dreamliner will begin flying international routes this fall, and we all feel a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of people suddenly cried out in desire to go to Japan.

For more information on the greatest R2 unit-powered flight short of an actual X-Wing, you can head over to ANA’s dedicated Star Wars mini-site complete with movie fanfare and droid beeps, because of course it is.

I look forward to seeing what awesome BB8-themed piece of technology we get in response as the battle for most beloved droid escalates.
