Remake, Reboot, and Sequel News To Make Your Head Explode: The Goonies, 12 Monkeys, and More

Oh Hollywood

The “and more,” in this case, is a Police Academy reboot, potentially infuriating Point Break remake news, casting for Terminator: Genesis, and screaming. So, so much screaming. Everything is remakes. ONE OF US. ONE OF US.

Let’s start out with the childhood killing-est: Director Richard Donner told TMZ that “We’re doing a sequel” to The Goonies and that “Hopefully all of [the original cast]” will return. I know Donner is the original director, so it’s not like Michael Bay is getting his hands on it, but leave the Goonies alone. Before you rend your hair to Professor X levels, though, note that The Goonies sequel has actually been happening for a while, in the same way that Guillermo del Toro‘s At The Mountains Of Madness was “happening,” ie, it’s stuck in development hell. It could still get made, but it’ll be more Warner Bros.’ call than Donner’s.

Moving on, Terminator: Genesis—which, reminder, stars Mother of Dragons Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke (no relation), Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a guy from The Hunger Games who’s not Attack the Block‘s John Boyega, screw everything—has three new actors: House of CardsSandrine Holt, Mad Men‘s Michael Gladis, and South Korean superstar Byung-hun Lee. There’s no word on any of their characters, but it’s a fair guess that Byung-hun Lee will be there in some sort of eye-candy capacity, because that’s what he does in American films (see: Red 2 and the G.I. Joe movies, in which he played Storm Shadow).

Meanwhile, Ray Winstone has been cast as the non-Gary Busey Gary Busey in the Point Break remake. Producer Broderick Johnson had some details to share with Collider about the film, namely that, though the relationship between the two main characters (played by newcomer Luke Bracey as not-Keanu Reeves Keanu Reeves and Gerard Butler as not-Patrick Swayze Patrick Swayze) will be the same, “everything else about the movie is different.  The narrative of the movie is different. While we do have surfing in the film, it is only a subset of the extreme sports that we deal with, including free-climbing, motocross, wing-suiting and so forth.”

Blah. Blahhhhhh.

Just as the Point Break remake is still, no takebacks, absolutely happening, so too is Syfy’s previously announced 12 Monkeys TV show, which has been picked up for a 13-episode order. It will star Aaron Stanford, aka the X-Franchise’s Pyro, and Suits Amanda Schull.  “12 Monkeys is a captivating time travel adventure and high stakes race against the clock,” says Syfy president Dave Howe. “We are thrilled to add it to our slate of engaging and thought-provoking new scripted projects including the recently announced event series Ascension and the second season renewal of Helix from Ron Moore.”

What, no namecheck for Sharknado 2: The Second One?

And to wrap up: Police Academy is getting a remake. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele of Comedy Central sketch comedy show Key and Peele are producing, along with original Police Academy producer Paul Maslansky, whose IMDB page is littered with Police Academy credits. The remake, like The Goonies sequel, has been stuck in development hell for some time already, but with Key and Peele getting attached it’s looking like it might actually happen.

Remake, reboot, and sequel news: OVER. Which of the five we’ve told you about—The Goonies 2, Police Academy, Terminator: Genesis, Point Break, 12 Monkeys—are you least looking forward to? Which are you least not looking forward to? I thought of saying “most looking forward to,” but that doesn’t seem to apply all too much here.
