Ripley Deserves Better Than What Ridley Scott Has Planned for Her Story in Aliens Prequels

Recommended Videos

Despite completely torpedoing many of our hopes and dreams regarding that Neill Blomkamp-directed Aliens sequel, Ridley Scott says that he’s got some hopeful plans for everyone’s favorite sci-fi heroine: Ripley. The thing is, though, it might not be exactly in the way you’d think.

In an interview, Scott said that we might end up seeing Ripley again, though perhaps tangentially. One fan asked the director whether Scott would ever get into the CGI facial overlay trend that’s been popping up in films as of late, usually as a method of making an actor appear as old as they were when their original film in the series first came out.

But Scott said that since we’ve gone back in time to explore the prequels with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant and all, we’re actually coming up on the time when Ripley’s parents would be alive. But even then, Ripley’s still a ways off, as he explained: “The time constraints, of what’s the time between this film, where we leave David going off heading for that colony, I think you’re probably two films out from even considering her.”

I’m not sure how stoked I’d be to see a film that even so much as glances on Ripley’s parents. While I’m sure there might be an interesting story there, know that I’m being completely honest when I say that I’m one of the (many, I’m sure) people who believe that the Alien franchise is, was, and perhaps arguably, should be about her. This beating around the bush is, to put it bluntly, a bit tiring. One wonders if the critics agree, as well, as the critical responses to both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant have been somewhat underwhelming. That being said, though, both films did pretty well at the box office, so in that sense, they were successful.

Point is, Scott wants to keep making Aliens films. That’s cool. I just think it’s time those films went back to the character who made the first few such a darn smashing success.
