Gone are the days of cat ears and a cheetah-print motif. While we love Josie and the Pussycats’ traditional look, this is New Riverdale as captured by The CW’s upcoming show, Riverdale, and there are a whole lot of changes afoot. Creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa shared this set photo today featuring our favorite all-girl band.
The bandmates and besties (when the stresses of band life don’t get to them) are played by Ashleigh Murray (as Josie), Asha Bromfield (as Melody) and Irie Hayleau (as Val), and according to CBR.com, Aguirre-Sacasa wanted to reimagine the band, “telling co-producer Greg Berlanti to ‘imagine Josie and the Pussycats as Destiny’s Child.'” Considering what the music industry actually looks like today, that’s not exactly a bad move.
The actresses themselves also posted some photos from the set, and seem thrilled to be taking on these iconic characters!

I love that these women look fun and silly, but also appropriately fierce. It seems they’ll need that ferocity, as Riverdale seems to be presenting a universe that’s a little closer to Twin Peaks than it is to Archie Comics. Back in May, we shared the official show description with you, and Carolyn was overwhelmed by the level of drama it suggested. Still, we’re glad that Josie and the Pussycats will be a part of it, and that their semi-contentious relationship with Archie will be a major plot point.
Are you excited for Riverdale?
