Robert Redford Just Commited the First Sin of Being in a Superhero Movie: You Don’t Talk About Your Superhero Movie

Robert Redford is, as he admits himself, delving into a new arena of filmmaking with a role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The world of genre movies, in a massive cinema franchise, and a sequel. So far what we know about Redford’s role is that he’s an officer of S.H.I.E.L.D., and possibly one that outranks Nick Fury.

But Redford may have let slip something a bit more specific about his character in an interview recently. It’s also a possible spoiler. Awww, it’s Baby’s First Movie With An Obsessive and Detail Oriented Fanbase!

Redford told The Straits Times:

I think a career requires a certain amount of reinvention. If you get caught in one track I think that can be dangerous. Success has a dark side to it. you want to be careful if you’ve had success at something, that you not try and follow it by just duplicating it. That’s why I’m doing this Captain America thing. I like the idea of playing a villain… I did that just because it’s a different thing for me to do.

Redford could mean this in a less literal sense than comic fans usually do, but he didn’t say “playing a bad guy” which could just mean that he’s a jerk, or that he’s playing “the villain.” He said he’s playing “a villain.” That seems to indicate something a bit more “classical,” if you know what I mean. And for a movie with Captain America, Black Widow, the Falcon (whose role is apparently, excitingly, a major one), Nick Fury, and Maria Hill, well… it could use all the villains it can get. Fortunately, it’s probably got the Winter Soldier, Dr. Zola, Crossbones, and even Batroc the Leaper.

Yes. Batroc the Leaper.
