Gene Roddenberry’s Son Joins New Star Trek Show as an Executive Producer

It's a family affair!

CBS confirmed today that there will be a Roddenberry associated with their new Star Trek show! Roddenberry Entertainment president Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, will be joining Bryan Fuller’s Star Trek series along with Roddenberry COO, Trevor Roth!

Roddenberry and Roth will be joining Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin and Bryan Fuller (there IS at least one woman already on this project!) as Executive Producers, and we already confirmed that Nicholas Meyer would be on the staff as well! It seems that Fuller is very concerned about this Star Trek being done right, and as true to Roddenberry’s vision as possible, while also giving Trek fans something new to love. According to a CBS press release, Fuller says:

Gene Roddenberry, the Great Bird of the Galaxy, left a finely feathered nest for all who love Star Trek to enjoy. And it is only fitting that Rod Roddenberry and Roddenberry Entertainment join our new Trek adventure to ensure that his father’s legacy of hope for the future and infinite diversity in infinite combinations runs through our tales as Gene Roddenberry intended.

Rod Roddenberry didn’t always have the easiest relationship with his father’s legacy. Yet, as he explored that legacy in what became the documentary, Trek Nation, he realized just how important Star Trek means to people, and just what his father has accomplished. Today, he seems thrilled to be joining the next Trek adventure:

Moral dilemmas, human issues, complex characters and a genuine sense of optimism: These are the cornerstones of Star Trek and are what have made it such an influential and beloved franchise for the last 50 years. While I will always be humbled by its legacy and the legions of fans who are its guardians, it’s a genuine honor to be joining a team of imaginative and incredibly capable individuals whose endeavor it is to uphold the tenets of Star Trek’s legacy while bringing it to audiences in a new era and on a contemporary platform.

So, once again, Star Trek is coming to television with a Roddenberry at the helm. Pretty exciting stuff if you ask me!

The series will premiere on CBS in early 2017, with the pilot airing on the network. All subsequent episodes will be available exclusively through CBS All Access.
