Marvel’s Rogue Was Almost In The Wolverine… Sorta.
Almost Totally Excellent
Apparently, there was an early version of the script where Rogue makes an appearance in The Wolverine! But wait, doesn’t that movie take place in Japan? How does that work?
Well, dear readers, hit the jump to find out!
Mark Bomback, one of the writers on The Wolverine, outlined an idea where the old man in the movie had a power similar to Rogue’s, and likewise had a white stripe in his hair. Obviously the idea didn’t go through, apparently because “Eventually it became very goofy… I started realizing throughout the script that it became more problematic than cool.”
Bomback feels strongly about Rogue’s character– particularly the mechanics of her power and what that implies for the character.
I love Rogue and I just think that there’s something about this idea that Rogue is tremendously empathetic but incapable of safe human contact. That always moved me and I thought that’s what really got to the heart of what makes the X-Men franchise so unique…
So why toss her into The Wolverine?
It’s no accident to me that in the first X-Men film the first two mutants that you really see who have a connection are Wolverine and Rogue. There’s something special between them, so I was trying to bring Rogue into it, but it just didn’t get there. I regretted there wasn’t a way to figure it out, but when I look at the film now, it would have stuck out if we tried to shoehorn her in there just because it was another character from the universe.
I think leaving her out was ultimately a wise choice, but no need to fear– Rogue will be making an appearance in Days of Future Past, so this is by no means the last time we’ll be seeing her with the rest of the X-Men on the big screen.
