I’m Extremely Here for this Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Behind-the-Scenes Footage

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH US

Star Wars Celebration is happening live right now, and one of the most exciting things to come out of it so far is this behind-the-scenes clip of the making of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, featuring a lot of new footage.

The clip indicates that, like The Force Awakens, Rogue One will feature a ton of impressive practical effects. It shows us some haunting shots of the mysterious beach battle between the titular rogues and the stormtroopers/deathroopers. We also get fleeting but intriguing glimpses of Mon Mothma, Ben Mendelsohn’s Orson Krennic, and Jyn’s rogueish peers.

It’s exciting to get to see Felicity Jones both kicking butt (and jumping, and falling, and shooting) as Jyn in the middle of action in this clip, and showing off more of the character’s personality—we see Jyn feeding a small child and saying “may the Force be with us” to her crewmates (so I guess she at least believes in the Force?). As exciting as it is to see Jyn as the focus of this footage, I still wish Rogue One had more female characters to get pumped about. But who knows, maybe Mon Mothma will play a very significant role!

Director Gareth Edwards also talks briefly in the clip about his desire to respect the Star Wars universe that’s come before Rogue One while also innovating: “if you’re too respectful of it, if you dare not do anything new, then what are you bringing to the table?” A common criticism of The Force Awakens was that the movie hewed too closely to a formula that had been successful for Star Wars in the past; if nothing else, Rogue One doesn’t seem like it will have that problem.
