Fans Recreated Rogue One’s Best Scene at Star Wars Celebration

Recommended Videos

There was a lot of exciting, official Star Wars news to be had at Star Wars Celebration last week, but there was also a lot of fun with fans to go around for the franchise’s 40th anniversary. When that many diehard Star Wars lovers show up in one place, costumes and all, it raises some unique opportunities, and a group of fans seized the day by recreating a particularly memorable scene from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

As you can see in the video above, they put together their own version of the claustrophobic Darth Vader fight (if you can even call it a fight) scene from the end of the movie, wherein he tries to chase down the disk containing the plans to the Death Star before it falls into Leia’s hands. It was an excellent scene not only because it gave everyone the series’ iconic villain in action, but because it actually made him terrifying. Vader stalked inexorably down the hallway more like a monster in a horror movie than anything else, and it was probably the scariest he’s ever been on-screen.

The fan version loses a bit of that, but thanks to the expendable rebel troops playing along as good sports, Vader still looks pretty powerful reflecting imaginary blaster shots, slicing into people with his lightsaber, and—if I’m not mistaken—delivering a fairly convincing Force choke around the 23-second mark thanks to some quick improv. That’s just awesome.

Although, I do feel bad awarding the honor of “best scene” in Rogue One to Darth Vader, not just because it seems it was only added at the last minute, but because the movie really was a great ensemble, and if anything, I wish we’d gotten more time with some of these characters. On the other hand, Vader definitely also had the worst scene in the movie with his Force choke dad joke, so I think it all balances out in the end.
