Marvel’s Kevin Feige Is Into the Idea of Ronda Rousey Playing Captain Marvel

Recommended Videos

Yesterday, we found out that Kevin Feige was keeping an eye on all of our opinions about who should play Captain Marvel when the character finally makes it to the movie screen in November, 2018. But which specific fan casting ideas has he taken a liking to? Real-life MMA fighter Ronda Rousey, for one.

Rousey herself floated the idea in a Reddit AMA (despite being a little off on the name), and fans have really taken hold, as she has taken pleasure in Instagramming their fan art. So, of course, on Kevin Feige’s Age of Ultron press duties that have already resulted in so many interesting tidbits from the Marvel mastermind, the question of a Rousey-helmed Captain Marvel movie was posed by IGN, and Feige responded, “I love it.”

He was talking about her enthusiasm in campaigning for the part, which demonstrates the draw of Marvel properties in his mind, but he was also quick to point out that there’s already precedent within the MCU for casting someone who isn’t primarily an actor:

You look at the ways we’ve cast our films in the past and it’s always about who’s the best person to inhabit the character, whether that is an actor like Chris Hemsworth who bulks up, or a wrestler like Dave Bautista who played Drax who ends up being an amazing performer, an amazing actor and a clever and witty and pointed comedic actor. For us, it’s sitting down with people and starting to meet people and as the script takes shape and as we start to build who the character should be and finding the right person to match it up. We haven’t necessarily started sitting down with people yet and meeting on that part.

I think we can all agree that if Rousey were as great as Captain Marvel as Bautista was as Drax, the MCU would be all the better for it. We may not be entirely enthusiastic about everything Rousey’s ever said or done, but it sure would be great to see a different body type for a female superhero for once.
