Forget True Love’s Kiss, Snow White’s Sister Will Do the Rescuing in Disney’s Rose Red
Sorry, Ferdinand.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is working on a movie about Snow White’s sister—and she sounds like a real bad-ass.
The film will be titled Rose Red, although the Rose Red of Grimms’ Fairy Tales had no relation to the Snow White story. Here’s a synopsis, via THR:
The story is a revisionist take that transposes Rose Red into the Snow White tale, making her a key player in the later part of the classic story. When Snow White takes a bite from the iconic poison apple and falls into her Sleeping Death, her estranged sister, Rose Red, must undertake a dangerous quest with Grumpy and the other dwarves to find a way to break the curse and bring Snow White back to life.
Disney is currently working from a script by Justin Merz, but it will be reworked with help from Evan Daugherty, the writer of 2014’s Kristen Stewart-starring Snow White and the Huntsman. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Rose Red is intended to have a “companion piece” feel, but it’s unclear whether or not it will be directly connected to Snow White and the Huntsman, or include any of the actors from that film (who am I kidding, I’m sure they won’t be bringing Kristen Stewart back).
Although I’m nearing the saturation point for live-action re-imaginings of classic Disney fare, it is exciting that this take on the Snow White story will, like Frozen, focus more on female friendship than the classic Prince Charming archetype.
What do you think of this concept? Who would you want to see play Rose Red? And what about Grumpy?
