The Russo Brothers Are Officially Directing The Avengers: Infinity War Films
BRING ON THE GAUNTLET
It’s been rumored for months, but we finally have an official announcement: the Russo brothers will be taking the helm for Avengers: Infinity War Parts I and II.
Joe and Anthony Russo have already had great training in the Marvel universe, having already directed the excellent Captain America: The Winter Soldier and an episode of Agent Carter, and they’re already signed on for Captain America: Civil War, so they’ve firmly ensconced themselves in Marvel’s gigantic embrace – a long way from their Community and Arrested Development origins.
Plus, it’s not like they’re pushing Whedon out against his will – he’s basically said “HELL NO” to directing another Avengers film to every outlet that will listen, wanting to focus more on developing something original. Like, perhaps, Serenity 2? Just spitballing, here.
Though there are no writers currently attached to the project, rumor has it Marvel is in talks with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who worked on the Captain America movie scripts—and who happen to be the creators of Agent Carter.
If you’re curious about what all this Phase 3 stuff means in the greater Marvel universe, check out our epic Marvel masterpost – but basically Infinity War is going to be the culmination of everything that’s happened in Marvel’s first three phases, which will likely mean a huge battle with Thanos over the Infinity Stones and Gauntlet.
Though it hasn’t been super obvious, the Infinity Stones have been popping up all over Marvel films for a while now:
In the comics, Thanos collects all the stones into a big golden glove (which was also seen in Odin’s vault in the films), which he then uses to destroy half of the universe basically to make his girlfriend happy. And guess who puts the universe back to rights again? None other than Thanos’s adopted daughter and bad-ass queen of our hearts, Nebula – who we’ve just learned is back for Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
So what do you think? Will the Russo brothers do the Avengers justice?
