Sasaki and Miyano spin-off

Just when I thought I’d have to wait to hear any more Sasaki and Miyano announcements, Yen Press has revealed that they’ll be releasing the spinoff manga to the wholesome “everything erupts into colors when I’m around you” series. Yen Press has been releasing the manga for Sasaki and Miyano (the fifth volume was recently released), and now they’re set to release Hirano and Kagiura.

This manga is the highly anticipated spin-off to the popular boys’ love series Sasaki and Miyano. The series features two lovable side characters who now have a story of their own! This announcement comes following the publication of the fifth volume of Sasaki and Miyano and the finale of its beloved anime adaptation, which left fans hungry for more.

Synopsis

(Shou Harusono)

Basketball players. Bad boys who aren’t really bad boys. Roommates. Senpai-kouhai BL romance. It all started when Kagiura moved into the school dorms with what seemed to be a bad-boy upperclassman. But after he’s left in the tender care of his mother hen of a roommate, Hirano, it’s too much to ask for Kagiura not to fall in love…right?!

From the author of Sasaki and Miyano comes Hirano and Kagiura, a spin-off filled with answers to the questions Miyano never knew he had. Do they like-like each other? Are they dating? What juicy things do they get up to behind closed doors?!

Insert a lot of fangirling

As someone who discovered Sasaki and Miyano through the anime series, I’m excited to dip my toes into the manga (I recently got a hold of the first two volumes). In the anime, Miyano often teases Hirano about his roommate, treating it like boys’ love fodder for him to fantasize about. It sounds like a silly little gag to go along with Miyano’s fanboy ways, but throughout the series, you do get to see Hirano’s roommate … kinda.

Kagiura is sometimes heard in the background of certain scenes or heard talking to Hirano offscreen. There’s also one particular moment where Miyano’s asking what it means to like someone where we get a glimpse of Hirano looking out at Kagiura. Kagiura looks very happy to see Hirano, shouting his name as Hirano watches him from the window. All of this is shown during a monologue about how liking someone means you want to be close to them and do things for them.

Kagiura’s appearances in the anime are a giant tease, so much so that when you watch the end credits, you can see someone running up to meet up with Hirano before the camera cuts the shot (that someone is Kagiura). Knowing that there is actually an entire manga dedicated to these two is fun news to receive. This could’ve very well been an ongoing joke about Hirano’s roommate, but not only is he a key character in the spinoff, but apparently … Miyano’s right? And this IS a case of “but they were roommates” boys love???

We’ll get to see for ourselves when the first volume of Hirano and Kagiura is released in October 2022.
