Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Box Office: It Doesn’t Look Good
Scott Pilgrim may be good at fighting exes, but not at fighting middle-aged action heroes, Julia Roberts, or Will Ferrell.
At least, according to current estimates of his movie’s box office pull for this weekend.
Since opening, Pilgrim ($4.7 million) has so far fallen behind The Expendables ($13.5 million), Eat Pray Love ($9 million), and the already a week old The Other Guys ($5.7 million).
From Bleeding Cool:
Now, a film like Scot Pilgrim may have the chance of performing better over the weekend, as it is more likely to be able to engender repeat viewings. But this is a poor performance… and unlike Kick Ass, it’s unable to pull in any extra Thursday release figures to help massage the statistics.
It’s still made more money so far this weekend than Inception, but we’re honestly not sure if that’s something to be proud of or not.
We’ll have to wait and see if, come Monday morning, these estimates remain true. But if they do, what exactly does that mean? Is Comic Con saturation maybe not always the best way to market a movie? Is it unwise to release a romantic/action/comedy on a weekend when it competes with a big budget/name action movie, a chick flick, and an action/comedy?
Or maybe the mainstream is simply not ready for romance and video games in the same colorful candy shell.
