Thanks to the critical and commercial success of Scream, a.k.a. Scream 5, Paramount has ordered the next chapter of the self-aware horror saga, and we now know the official Scream 6 release date. Scream 5, which hit theaters in January, was the first installment of the series since 2011’s Scream 4, and the first to not be directed by horror master Wes Craven, who passed away in 2015. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not) will return to direct Scream 6, which is expected to see both its new and legacy characters return. It’s a safe bet that Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox will reprise their roles as Sydney Bristow and Gale Weathers. And audiences are likely to see Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega reprise their roles as sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter.

Bettinelli-Oplin and Gillett released a statement saying, “Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators — and in the lineage Wes and Kevin [Williamson] so expertly built — has been the thrill of a lifetime, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life.”

When does Scream 6 come out?

Paramount has announced plans to release Scream 6 on March 10, 2023. In addition to Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, screenwriters James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not) will return, as well. Scream 5 was made on a $25 million budget and, since its release, has grossed over $139 million worldwide. Filming for Scream 6 is expected to begin this summer.

Cox discussed the sequel in a recent episode of the Just for Variety podcast with host Marc Malkin, saying, “I got the script yesterday, … I haven’t read it yet, I just got it… I’m excited to read it, and I know they’re going to start filming… I think, in June, in Canada.” She quipped, “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say anything. Let me tell you the killer!”

Campbell was a bit more cagey with her response. During a Q+A panel at the Mad Monster Party horror convention in February, she said, “They have approached me, … There’s no script yet. There is a draft coming in soon is what I was told. Actually, I was supposed to call a producer yesterday, because he wanted to talk to me about what’s going on.” She added, “You know, we’ll see. I’ll read the script and see how I feel.”

This post has been updated to reflect Paramount Picture’s announcement that Scream 6 has moved from March 31, 2023 to March 10, 2023.
